Welcome to the 2023-24 school year. I hope you all had a great summer, spending time with family and friends. I sure did and I am rested and ready for a great school year!
I wanted to share that we said goodbye to a couple of staff members during the summer. Mrs. Megan Brown has accepted a promotion and is now the Elementary Learning Specialist at Evergreen Elementary. Dr. Shannon Martin and her family relocated to Indiana. Please join me in wishing them on their new adventures! We are certainly going to miss them.
I want to take this opportunity to introduce some new members of the Collegewood family:
-Mr. Roman Nunez is our new intervention teacher. He comes to us with several years of teaching experience and also served as a kinder aide.
-Mrs. Kaitlyn Herrera is our new part-time Visual and Performing Arts teacher. She will provide lessons in the different domains (visual, dance, music, and theater) to students in grades 1-5.
-Ms. Janet Orozco-Brown is our new Title 1 Specialist. She previously served as an EL Coordinator and Intervention teacher in Los Angeles.
I am confident our new staff will serve our students well.
At Collegewood, we are committed to empowering students to develop intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally. Our dedicated teachers will continue to provide all students with high-quality instruction designed to meet the needs of all our diverse learners. Using Thinking Maps, small group instruction, targeted learning objectives, and consistent, meaningful feedback, our teachers strive to provide all students with engaging lessons to foster growth in academics, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. In short, our teachers will provide students with the necessary tools to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world and develop the skills to become successful global citizens!
This year our theme is “At Collegewood, We Cultivate Belonging”. We want to make sure all of our students, staff, and families feel like they belong in the Collegewood Community. My goal is to have every student be their authentic self and know they will always be loved and accepted! I will be sharing books and adding messages in our video Daily Cougar Chronicle to help students know we care about them and that we are so happy they are here. In addition, I have purchased a Social Emotional Learning Program, Second Step, for teachers to continue their daily SEL lessons. It is our differences that make us each special and unique and I want to celebrate our authentic, diverse community!
As our returning families know, I am very active on social media to share with our community all of the amazing things happening during the school day. Please follow us!
As I move into my second year at Collegewood, I am grateful for such a caring and welcoming community. I know 2023-24 is going to be a great school year for us all!
Walnut Valley Unified School District is proud to recognize Black History Month as we continue to provide our organization with resources to celebrate diversity while building equitable and inclusive practices for our community.
